Equine Therapy for Anxiety, Depression and Trauma

Sometimes healing doesn’t happen by talking more—it happens by experiencing something different.

How Does Horse Therapy help with Anxiety, Trauma and Relationship issues?

How do horses help people heal?

Horses provide real-time feedback about stress, emotions, and communication.

There’s something incredibly honest about working with horses. They respond to your energy, your presence, your intensity—not your words. That kind of feedback can create powerful awareness and opening for change.

Maybe you have been stuck for a while. Trying harder and harder until you end up exhausted and overwhelmed….and STUCK. In traditional counseling you talk about what happened in the past week or what happened in past trauma.

Horses help you see your patterns - good and bad

With equine therapy instead of "just talking" about problems, you will be working with the horses to uncover patterns and mindsets that either help you move forward or keep you stuck. As you work with horses you will play out the same patterns of “trying harder” or “being overwhelmed” but you also have the opportunity to try new approaches or notice small things that are actually working.

Horses give you clear and honest feedback

As you practice those solutions, they give you feedback. Horses don’t have any agenda other than being safe. And they cannot lie and will let you know clearly what works and what doesn’t. As you practice what works, you will be developing new neural pathways in your brain that lead to healing and real change.

Horses help you manage anxiety

They are very sensitive to any kind of tension, anxiety or incongruency. In order to develop a good relationship with a horse (or a person), it is vital to learn how to manage your emotions and thoughts in a healthy way. We will help you learn how to manage emotions, let go of unhealthy thoughts and insecurities, and engage in clear communication. As you do this the horses respond by connecting more strongly to you.

You practice emotional regulation in real time

Instead of learning tools in theory, you begin practicing them in the moment—breathing, grounding, slowing down, noticing your internal state, and seeing how that impacts connection

Horse Therapy is relationship and solution focused

With horses, you have the opportunity to identify strengths and relationship skills in a non-judgmental environment Then you can practice different solutions until you find one that works! All work is on the ground. You will not do any riding and no horse experience is needed. Just like traditional therapy though, our licensed therapists will help guide the process of goal setting and change. And just like a good coach we are there to help you find your way.

What does Equine Therapy look like at Hope Reins?

At Hope Reins, equine therapy is offered in intensive and retreat-based formats throughout the year rather than as weekly ongoing sessions. These focused experiences are designed to give you space away from everyday stressors so you can slow down, gain insight, and engage more deeply in the healing process.

Many people find that stepping out of their normal environment allows them to notice emotional patterns, relationship dynamics, and stress responses more clearly—in the moment, not just after the fact. Working with horses in real time creates opportunities for greater self-awareness, emotional regulation, and meaningful change.

Sessions are held in partnership with a horse facility near Starved Rock, Illinois, in a peaceful, nature-based setting that supports reflection, restoration, and personal growth.

What can I expect in an equine therapy session?

All equine therapy sessions are ground-based (no riding required). No horse experience is needed. Sessions will be led by a licensed therapist and designed around your personal goals—whether that’s anxiety, trauma recovery, relationship patterns, or emotional regulation.

If you’ve been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or like traditional talk therapy hasn’t fully reached what you’re carrying, equine therapy offers a different way in.

Not by doing more—but by experiencing something honest, present, and deeply human.
